Obon Sushi & Udon, Kingston
This tiny neighbourhood restaurant is a hidden gem serving up spankingly fresh and imaginative sushi. The prawn tempura is also rather special. There’s only a handful of tables so book in advance. It’s a fun place and you can watch the chefs in action in the open kitchen. There is also a Teddington branch, offering a grill menu, too.

The French Table, Surbiton
Always elegant, The French Table offers refined and seasonal French dishes and a great wine list. There is a five-course tasting menu you can opt for to get the full experience, as well as a matching wine flight.

Roz Ana, Kingston
The lovely Roz Ana is a chic restaurant and bar, which offers regional specialities from India. Stand-outs include a Goan-style pork belly vinha d’alhos and Southern Indian mooplah beef curry. Don’t miss the crispy soft shell crab with toasted coconut – it is divine.

The Petersham Hotel, Petersham
You can come in the daytime and gaze out at the incredible view over Petersham Meadows and down to the Thames but equally we enjoy the night-time vibe which manages to be both casual and refined. It is also an excellent spot for afternoon tea.

L’assaggino, Kingston
This deli and restaurant specialises in the food of Sardinia. Pastas include the likes of black tagliolino with olive oil, garlic, chilli, cherry tomatoes and pistachio, and Sardinian pasta shells with basil pesto, fried courgettes and salty ricotta. Look out for the daily lunch menu and special offers. The atmosphere is casual and service friendly.

The Grey Horse, Kingston
This is a meat-eater’s heaven with all kinds of ribs, joints and burgers all barbecued to perfection. We would go to the ends of the earth for its beef short rib. Fortunately, we only have to go down the road. There’s cocktails and a vast range of whisky on offer too.

Peppe’s at the Cardinal, Kingston
This much-loved local is known for its incredible pizzas, which are incredibly light, crispy and delicious. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes. It is particularly lovely on a summer’s evening, with its outdoor garden.

Sticks N Sushi, Kingston
This branch of the sushi and skewers concept occupies a prime site in the town centre. The design is cool, the atmosphere lively, and there is a comprehensive menu of sushi and sashimi.

Al Forno, Kingston
This homely welcoming Italian is a great spot after a riverside stroll, and serves excellent pizza and pasta dishes. One of the most family friendly of Kingston restaurants.
